Among the honored guests at this year's Lake
Placid, New York Ironman USA is AOL's very own Running Man. We
knew
he could run, but swim and bike too.
AOL is sponsoring the
Iron Team division of Team in Training, an
organization devoted to raising money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma
Society. Ironman USA will be held on July 24, 2004, going
on it's sixth year.
Team In
Training (TNT) began in 1988, when Bruce Cleland of Rye, NY formed
a
team that raised funds and trained to run the New York City Marathon®
in honor of Cleland's daughter Georgia, a leukemia
survivor.
The
team of 38 runners raised $322,000 for the Society's Westchester/Hudson
Valley Chapter. Because of the pioneering efforts of Cleland and
the
Westchester/Hudson Valley Chapter, Team In Training was born and has
grown into the world's largest endurance sports training program.
More than 30,000 runners, walkers, cyclists and
triathletes who
will participate in the world's major marathons, triathlons and century
rides this year on behalf of the Society.
"We wanted to show that AOL Running Man is fast in
all events whether that's surfing the web, swimming, biking, or
running," said Andrew Weinstein, an AOL spokesman. "AOL has long
supported the cancer community and we also wanted to show our Running
Man can flex some muscles too."
AOL's Running Man will be greeting over 2000 participants as they cross
the finish line, after 2.4 miles of swimming, 112 miles on the bike and
a full marathon of 26.2 miles.
