The new Jack London Market at Jack London Square wont be a grocery store - it will have places selling food of course (assuming the developer can actually get anyone to lease there - so far no one has committed) but don't expect to be able to pop in and get a quart of milk and corn flakes.

The parking garage for the market (on the site of the current Amtrak parking lot) is required by City conditions of approval to have "at least 20,000 sf of neighborhood serving retail" in the ground floor. It wasn't possible to make the commit to that being a grocery store but that is what local residents hope and like yourself want. I'm sure there will be more stuff uptown - I've heard they are going to move out all of the auto-row people and put in stuff there too, can't recall if it would include a grocery store but you'd think with the hundreds of new condos being built up there it must do.
